Went in for an oil change and came out with a list of recommended replacements. Wallet is screaming, may be going on life support shortly. I think I’ve reached the point where I’ve spent almost the price of the car itself...

Made me think of everything replaced so far:

Passenger engine mount (x2)

Clutch

Lower engine mount

Hood shocks

Hatch shocks

Oil cap

Power steering reservoir seal

Intercooler boot

Alternator

AC compressor

Crank sensor seal

Oil pan gasket

Valve cover gasket (x2)

Driver CV boot

Oil pressure sender

Passenger axle

Front shocks

Rear shocks

Rear shock tops

Accessory belt tensioner

Belt idler

Crank pulley

Front crank pulley seal

Vanity mirror cover

Wheels and tires

Not to mention all the other stuff I willingly decided to do:

Intake

Pulley

Shifter

Intercooler

Wing

Turn signals

Rear sway bar

Control arm bushings

Lower e ngine mount bushing

Tint

Sunroof blockers

Camber tops

Strut tower defenders

Weather mats

Car rescue (jump pack, tire inflator, tire sealant)

Just venting I suppose. Love hate is especially strong with this car and I haven’t even had the more expensive repairs come up like supercharger service, clutch replacement, front end refresh, or brake replacement.

Z fever brought you back? I doubt that the hype will extend backwards to revaluing old Datsuns but I do like your build.

I also paid more in service and parts on both of my cars than what i paid for them but i did buy them cheap knowing it would cost me but at least i can repair/modify them how i like .

I think if I had done the same I couldn’t complain as much. I paid a premium on mine because it was more sorted with all sorts of preventative maintenance, but turns out even more can go wrong than I originally thought.

This is with my replacement car a 2006 Mini Cooper S.

Datsun is living its second life down somewhere in California. Hopefully not on fire. Glad you liked it, it was fun while it was around.

You are mostly before my time here but I did a little backreading last time you made a post.

That’s tough about the Mini being so difficult to keep on top of with maintenance and replacing worn out parts. I’ve always wanted one but the horror stories have (thus far) scared me off. They do tend to be cheaper than other options I’ve been looking at lately but that money would have to be sunk into repairs almost immediately.

The Datsun is 99% of what I posted so I imagine that is what most people know about. Hopefully it wasn’t too bad having to slog through all that.

I think if you know going in and have a list of the budget options that actually work it wouldn’t be as bad. There are a few guys who buy these for $500-$1000 and spend a few thousand and basically have a really nicely refreshed car. More fun than a lot of things under the $5k mark at that point.

I’m moving, so my tools are packed away, time is at a premium, and no garage space puts me at the mercy of my mechanic.

I didn’t do a thorough reading and skipped much of it. I just wanted some background. I don’t come here to slog but it was more a time thing than not being interested.

They do offer great bang for the buck but I’m nervous about how much work it would entail to keep one on the road. Plus I really don’t know what I’m doing with these. I have no mechanical skills whatsoever. Even your account of ownership isn’t the most encouraging.

It also dep ends on the quality of the parts used, if it’s not the original parts or equivalent quality it’s sometimes not better than having a 20yo original part fitted but at least the seller can say it ha s been changed :)
